Quan Thanh temple was built in 1028 under the reign of King Ly Thai To (the founder of Hanoi capital) by the side of a peaceful and beautiful lake (Westlake). It is one of recommended places for Hanoi.

It is one of four holy temples protecting the Forbidden city of Hanoi capital from the evils. Huyen Thien Tran Vu, the saint of Taoism, is Worshipped inside. He himself guards and administers the north of the country. Therefore, it is also called Tran Vu temple.

Tran Vu's statue was cast of black bronze in 1677 by Mr. Trum Trong, a craftman of Ngu Xa bronze casting village. This statue is considered as the masterpiece of bronze casting art.

Bisede the statue and the bell made by Trum Trong, the temple is also famous with the perfect decoration of mother pearl, lacquer, gold and silver leaves and four holy animals: Dragon, Phoenix, Unicon and Turtle.

During public holiday or the Lunar New Year Festival (Tet holiday) and on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month, the temple is full of Vietnamese people worshipping and praying for good health, good luck and happiness. Together with Tran Quoc pagoda in beautiful scenery, Quan Thanh temple is a great destination.

Probably our best "tour" was the day we spent on motor bikes visiting the tombs near Hue. The bikes allow for a much more intimate view of the countryside. And then - as I wrote - Mr. An was absolutely the best guide ever...Read more
