But Thap Pagoda
But Thap Pagoda
Located in But Thap Village of Dinh To Commune, Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh province, But Thap Pagoda is famous for various valuable ancient objects and 50 woodcarving statues of different sizes.
The most outstanding of all is Quan Am statue, known as Guanyin with one thousand arms and one thousand eyes. She was created in 1656 with the reverence of religion and beauty.
The Quan Am statue is 2.5 meters tall excluding its pedestal. Its 11 heads and 14 layers of arms with an eye in each palm form a 2.2 m circle in diameter. The goddess is sitting on a lotus lifted up by dragons. It is considered as the masterpieces of 17th century woodcarving art.
The pagoda was built under the King Tran Thanh Tong (1258-1278) and rebuilt in 1647 in the Le Dynasty according to Noi Cong Ngoai Quoc (Nei Kung Wai Kwo) architectural style. In other word, it has the shape of the Chinese script Kung inside and the script Kwo outside.
There are more than 100 compartments and the largest is But Thap (stone stupa shaped like a pen at this pagoda: But means pen, Thap means stupa or pen). Passing through its three-entrance gate, you will see an old bell tower with eight roofs. Then, get to the main temple complex. The main entrance of the temple is only open on big holidays and on other days, you enter the temple through the small side entrances.
But Thap Pagoda is not only an important place for pilgrims but also a tourist attraction in the countryside tour of Bat Trang pottery village - But Thap pagoda and Dong Ho traditional painting village.

Testimonials
Dear Ms Helen Pham
We had a wonderful amazing trip and will return as soon as we can afford it again. Thank you so much! I will write a great review on tripadvisor. Really the guides and hotels and tours were awesome. Ms. Nhung was very sweet and refreshingly honest, very likeable. Mr. Tam was fantastic, highly knowledgeable and funny. Probably our best "tour" was the day we spent on motor bikes visiting the tombs near Hue. The bikes allow for a much more intimate view of the countryside. And then - as I wrote - Mr. An was absolutely the best guide ever...Read more
