One Pillar Pagoda

best vietnam tours

As the thousand year old capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is a famous destination with many historic places. One of the most remarkable monuments is One Pillar Pagoda, the highlight for your Vietnam holiday.

This unique pagoda is located in Mot Cot street near the Ho Chi Minh complex (including Mausoleum, presidential palace, Ho Chi Minh stilt house). This area is a great stop for your Vietnam vacation.

According to the legend, The King Ly Thai Tong had no sons and the power of the dynasty was just given from father to son. Therefore, he went to different pagodas to pray for a son.

One night, in his dream, he saw the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara sitting on a great lotus flower in a square-shaped lotus pond on the western side of Thang Long Citadel with a boy.

Then, She gave the boy to the King. Months later, the Queen gave birth to a son and the King decided to build a pagoda in the shape of a lotus seat supported by one pillar to honour the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The pagoda emerging out of the water was built in 1049.

Unfortunately in 1954, the French forces destroyed this pagoda before withdrawing from Hanoi. Now, what you see is the One Pillar pagoda rebuilt in 1955 with the shame architecture.

Testimonials

We had a wonderful amazing trip and will return as soon as we can afford it again. Thank you so much! I will write a great review on tripadvisor. Really the guides and hotels and tours were awesome. Ms. Nhung was very sweet and refreshingly honest, very likeable. Mr. Tam was fantastic, highly knowledgeable and funny. Probably our best "tour" was the day we spent on motor bikes visiting the tombs near Hue. The bikes allow for a much more intimate view of the countryside. And then - as I wrote - Mr. An was absolutely the best guide ever...Read more
