For centuries, Hoi An Vietnam played an important role in the maritime trade of Southeast Asia. It started since second century BC. However, the trade was really booming in the mid-sixteen century when Chinese, Japanese and European vessels ran with the trade winds to gather in a big number at the port then called Fai Fo.

Its annual spring fair grew into exotic showcase of world produce: silks, brocades, ivory, fragrant oils .....from Southeast Asia and textiles, weaponry, sulphur, lead.....from Europeans.

Commercial activities was dominated by Japanese and Chinese merchants, many of them settled in Fai Fo, where each community maintained their own governor, legal code and strong cultural identity. The Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese built Hoi an old town of architectural monuments in various forms: living house, assembly hall, communal house, pagoda, shrine, temple, water well, bridge, wharf, market...
The streets cut one another, forming palaces and giving a good example of symbolic oriental cities in the Middle Age. So wonderful with its old aged and traditionally well kept habits and customs, the town is now an excellent model of a living museum of architecture and urban lifestyle.
